Milano HOMI 2017 ”AKITA COLLECTION”

Humans have used the nature around us to create things.

Among the resources produced by the earth, trees are materials that are deeply related to human life now and in the past. This project is about using trees grown in Akita to create a new style of furniture series, with a focus on detailing, and finishing, together with historic Akita wood craftsmen.

Many of Japan's forests are deeply intertwined and symbiotic with human life. Learning from nature, growing trees, cutting trees, using trees, and planting trees again, forests are protected, and protected again, and living creatures live in them. In recent years, how to make use of wood is up to the people of the land. It can be burned and turned into energy. With a number of options available, Akita Prefecture chose to once again create original furniture by craftsmen. The design was put together by bringing together a group of skilled craftsmen with skills in building wooden architecture and historical wooden furniture unique to the land, with the idea that their skills would be conveyed to the people using the furniture.

It is said that cedar trees have been growing wild in Akita Prefecture for about 5 million years. Akita cedar grows little by little in the cold environment, so the annual rings are finely grained and have a beautiful grain. The series of furniture made with craftsmen from 12 studios will be presented again this year, following last year.
